My Scrappy Quilts

My Scrappy Quilts

I adore quilting with scraps. There's something so satisfying in organizing what you've got into little usable bits and making something beautiful from it. In celebration of Scraptember, here are a few scrappy quilts I've made over the years.

Scrappy log cabins

Strips yearn to be a log cabin quilt! I had a long phase of making stars out of log cabin blocks. I love how subtle differences in value (light/dark) can make a larger overall pattern. Log cabins are a classic for a reason. I'm just now realizing I've never made a log cabin with the classic red center, representing the hearth as the heart of the home. Maybe it's time for another!

I made this with a bunch of naturally dyed linen mixed in with some prints, then hand quilted the whole thing.

How fun is that organic line quilting on this one? I went with chunkier, 2.5" strips for my log cabins.

This last one is a cheater log cabin but it was a blast to make! It ended up being a full size quilt and is used on my son's bed. I loved working in all the ice dyed bits.

Improv-ish quilts

I called these my improv-ish quilts because they used lots of leftover blocks and experiments, but put together in an intuitive way. If you want to know more about this style of quilting, I highly recommend Modern Improv Quilting by Laura Veenema.

Quilts out of BIG SCRAPS

You know how you have those scraps that are slightly larger pieces that you can't bear to cut into because it's your FAVORITE? That's why I made this scrap quilt with larger pieces. I love love loved all the florals I included in this one, and they just needed to be kept whole. I hand tied this quilt with bright pink wool yarn, which felted into little pom poms in the wash!

This little wall hanging was made from leftover strips from a log cabin project.

Ah, the scrappy spiderweb quilt. I don't know what it is about this quilt that prevents me from finishing it. I've promised myself to get it done by Halloween for... the past two years! Maybe this Scraptember will be the push I need. I think part of it is that it's still small - larger than in this photo, but only about 3 feet square. A little big to be a wall hanging, a little small to be a lap quilt. I feel like I should add more to it but I can't bring myself to make more blocks! I need to just accept it how it is and Get. It. Done.

Stay tuned for more of my scrappy quilts - this only scratched the surface!
